Writing Wednesday | Writing Propmt "Winter Solstice"

Happy New Year everyone! I am so sorry for not posting in such along time, but I promise you that I will be posting regularly from now on (baring that life doesn't get in the way too much). Today, I thought it would be best to do something a little different. I love writing prompts because you can always do something different with them all the time. This one is actually one of my favorite prompts because it is whimsical and I could expand it into a novel if I wanted. Without further ado, here is what I think of when I think of Winter Solstice.

Emmaline sat on a snow covered log, watching the Winter Fey danced round and round the bonfire. Evana, the queen of Winter, sat on her icy throne next to Emmaline's log while talking to Lord Draven about some political things that made absolutely no sense to Emmaline. For as long as she could remember, Emmaline has always been kept near Evana no matter where in the ice palace.  The others called her "Evana's Little Pet." It infuriated her to no end because it wasn't like she had a choice in living with the fey. She was taken from her home when she was six and she had no memory of her life before the fey. She shivered  from the cold despite her warm fox fur coat and continued to watch the dancing fey.

One of the fey, Absom, came over to her and she looked up at him, fearfully. Emmaline never knew what the fey were going to do to her. Queen Evana stopped talking to Lord Draven and looked questioningly at Absom. It was quite unusual for the Winter Queen to see any of her fey walk up to the little human girl without malice. Absom bowed to Queen Evana and Lord Draven.

"What can I do for you , Absom?" Evana asked.

"I would like to ask to dance with Emmaline, Your Majesty," Absom replied while looking at Emmaline out of the corner of his eye.

Emmaline was taken aback. Usually the fey wanted nothing to do with her and now one of them wanted to dance with her. She was confused and surprised with what was happening.

"Why would you want to dance with the filthy human? There are a lot of fey who you could dance with instead," Lord Draven said.

"Lord Draven silence yourself! This is not a matter for you to get involved in," Queen Evana snapped.
Lord Draven bowed his head and stepped back from the icy throne. Emmaline could tell that he was angry, but would not risk the wrath of the queen.

"Absom, you may dance with Emmaline. You may want to ask her yourself though," Queen Evana said, smiling.

Absom walked over to Emmaline and held out his hand.

"Would you like to dance, Lady Emmaline?" Absom asked.

"Yes," Emmaline replied, hesitantly while taking his hand.

Absom helped her up and led her to the bonfire. Some of the fey glared at her for intruding on the festivities, but others were too busy merry-making to care. Absom spun Emmaline around the bonfire and Emmaline couldn't help but laugh happily. The music wrapped around the glen causing the dancing to become faster. The cold, winter night lasted long until morning and Emmaline was happy during the Winter Solstice.

Writing Wednesday | "Rolling Hills and Mighty Mountains"

This is something I wrote for a contest of some type for figment.com. I just love this one a lot because it's based off a vacation I took years ago. Hope you all enjoy! It started out as any vacation would. A long car drive down the highway watching other cars zoom by and making shapes out of the clouds. Sometimes I would sleep, but other times I would imagine being anywhere else than in the car. Grandpa would look at me in the rear view mirror from time to time as he drove, but I paid no special attention to his glances. Why should I? I didn't want to be stuck in the car as we headed to see some relatives I had never met in West Virginia. I was bored. There was nothing to do but stare out the window and even that got boring after a while. "What are you thinking about, Nicole?" Mom asked from behind me. I turned around in my seat to look at Mom. She was reading another Jane Austen novel while my sister was leaning against her shoulder, asleep. How my mo...

Five Tips to Get Out of a Reading Slump

Hey fellow readers! So seeing as I've been in a bit of an off-and-on reading slump for the past couple of months, I decided that I'll give you a few tips to help you all get out of a slump when you find yourselves in one. Without further preamble, here are five tips to out of a reading slump. 1.  Do Something Else: Sometimes after a really good/emotional/powerful book, it's easy to fall into a reading slump. Doing something else- whether it be playing video games or watching t.v.- can be a worthwhile break from reading. A break from reading can sometimes help to reignite the passion to read. 2. Get a Change of Scenery: Reading in the same spot all the time can cause a reading slump. So go find a new spot to read! Be it in the kitchen, the living room, or outside. Reading in a different place can be very beneficial to keep from falling into a slump. 3. Find a New Genre to Read: When reading the same genre over and over again, it causes a reading slump due to reading th...

Writing Wednesday | Writing Prompt "Candy Hearts"

Since Valentine's Day was yesterday, I decided to post this piece in honor of it. The writing might seem a little rushed, so I apologize for that. Without further ado, I present to you "Candy Hearts"! Sophia gave a mental groan when she walked into school and saw all the red heart decorations in the halls. Today was Valentine's Day and she was not so happy about it. She could already hear several couples saying sweet nothings to each other and practically see them kissing like there's no tomorrow. She walked to her locker where her best friend, Amy, was waiting. "Morning, Sophia!" Amy exclaimed, enthusiastically. Sophia gave her a glare and opened her locker. Amy giggled at her best friend's expression. She knew how much Sophia hated Valentine's Day ever since her ex-boyfriend broke up with her on the same day almost three years ago. For Sophia, this day always brought back such painful memories. She took out some books, put them in ...
